Thinking of adopting a puppy? It's probably time to puppy proof your home. Puppies are curious explorers who are bound to put anything they find into their mouths. Scan your home and yard for potential dangers to your puppy. You'll also want to look for dangers that a puppy poses to your stuff! Here are a few puppy proofing tips: What is at puppy height or lower? (Puppy height should be considered as the height of a puppy's nose, tongue, or front paw, when standing on his back paws.) If it's not something you would eat, or something that isn't meant for slobber or chew marks, pick it up or put it out of the way. Plants, remote controls, ipods, cell phones, children's toys, shoes or slippers, clothes, packs of cigarettes, eyeglasses, and breakables such as glass knickknacks are just a few examples. Electrical cords are a great temptation for puppies and are also very dangerous. You can hide cords or place them in spiral cable wrap, cord concealers, or even PVC pipe. Cords from window blinds should also be placed up and out of reach. Kitchen garbage cans and small bathroom wastebaskets are equally appealing to most puppies. Put them up high or behind closed doors. Closing a bathroom door is also often easier to remember than putting down the toilet lid!
